Established in 1637, St. Mary's County was the first colony to practice religious tolerance and to establish peaceful relations with the native Indians. As the site of Maryland's first capital, St. Mary's County was also the first community to place an African-American in a governmental position and the site of the first request for women's suffrage.
Several must-see opportunities include the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and the National Wildlife Visitors Center and Research Refuge. Visit the Riverwalk on Solomon's Island, tour the Drum Point Lighthouse, enjoy a concert at the Calvert Marine Museum, or just kick back and relax at one of the many waterfront dining establishments.
