Privacy Policy

We believe in protecting your privacy on the web, and wanted to make clear what we do and do not collect. We last updated this privacy policy in May 2018. Please let us know if you have any questions or feedback at [email protected]. Thanks!

What data do we collect and how do we use it?

We collect information primarily to understand our users better (on the whole, not at an individual level) and to make your experience better. We *do not* share any of our users' information with any third party, including partners and sponsors.

We use cookies to enable particular features on the site and in the mobile apps and to help keep you logged in. For example, when you've saved a home base, we use cookies to ensure that you are able to easily get to your selected home base from the homepage of the site or app from then on, until you sign out (at which point your session is deleted).

We also use third party analytics from Apple and Google for our mobile apps to see overall traffic patterns. For both the website and mobile apps, we use Google Analytics to learn how much traffic we have overall and what things are taking place. Since we are supported through sponsorship, we also use Google Analytics to let our sponsors know how many times people viewed and clicked on their pages and banners, but we never share the information of individuals with them.

Additionally, we allow users to sign up for an account, at which point you'll create a username, email address, and password. We recommend you choose a unique password, one that is you have not used on other sites. In your profile, we allow you to optionally let us know your attributes (status, branch, rank, gender, and age). We allow you to create a username and choose from several avatar options. We just use this information to learn a bit more about our users as a whole, not individually. Most importantly, we never share any personally identifiable information with any third-party.

Finally, we collect aggregate data about the results of phone calls. We ask whether phone calls were successful in order to track the most commonly called phone numbers and whether people were actually able to get through to the establishment in order to identify phone numbers that we need to verify their accuracy.

How can you limit what we collect?

The easiest way to limit storage of your information is not to sign up for an account. We've purposely built Base Directory to enable you to see everything at any base worldwide without having to provide us any information. If you choose not to sign up for an account, you're still able to easily access information for establishments at every base we have available. The only thing you're prevented from doing without an account is uploading photos, leaving reviews, and saving a home base to get back to that more quickly.

If you do choose to sign up for an account, only potentially identifiable information required to have an account on Base Directory are an email address and username. You are able to change your username and email address at any time. Any additional information you voluntarily provide to us in your profile is 100% optional for you to provide and can be changed or removed by you at any time.

What permissions do we use on the Base Directory mobile applications?

On the mobile applications, we use permissions to detect whether your phone has wifi or cellular data access. Because we load in data on the app from our servers, you need internet access to be able to use it.

We also use permissions to initiate phone calls to establishments listed in the mobile app and understanding when each phone call ended. There is nothing stored except that a phone call was made and if you choose to provide the outcome of the call (for example, that the number was correct), we store that information for each establishment, and not at all relating to any individual user. We are not tracking your particular device or what individual called a particular establishment.

Finally, we utilize permissions in allowing you to upload photos from your phone to an establishment's page. This is purely optional, and there is no requirement whatsoever that you provide access to your camera or photos.

When will we contact you?

When you are logged in or include their email when leaving a review, uploading a photo, or requesting a correction, we will often email you to thank you for helping to make the resource better and/or ask for additional information to help us fulfill your request.

If you sign up for an account, we may occasionally send you promotional emails. However, these will be very infrequent if at all, and they will always have a mechanism for you to opt out of future promotional communication. If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will either notify you via email or by posting a notice on the website and mobile apps.

How do we protect your information?

First, we do our best to not collect enough information to be harmful to you if it were to be compromised. We ask for basic information (rank, branch, etc.) as part of your profile to get a better sense of our user base, but if this information were to be compromised, it does not contain the information that is most problematic in a breach, like your full name, social security number, home address, etc.

In addition, we follow industry standards to protect the personal information submitted to us (including password encryption and SSL). However, no method of transmitted data on the internet is completely secure. While we do our best to protect the information you give to us, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Can you delete your account?

Yes, of course! And if you do decide to delete your account, it will be gone forever, along with all reviews you've submitted and photos you've uploaded. We believe your content is yours, and if you decide you no longer want it on our site, then we want you to be able to walk away with no strings attached.

You can cancel your account at any time from your account page.

What happens when we change this policy?

We may revise this privacy policy on occasion if new things are required or if we have made changes in our procedures. If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will notify you by email or by posting a notice on the website and apps when the changes go into effect. By continuing to access or use Base Directory after those changes become effective, you agree to the revised Privacy Policy.

How can you ask questions or find out more?

If you have any questions whatsoever, please email us.
