Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, often referred to as "gitmo," is located at Guantanamo Bay on the southeastern end of Cuba. It is the only US military installation located in a Communist, non-allied country and the oldest overseas US Naval Base. The mission of Guantanamo Naval Base is to provide maintenance, refueling and security for watercraft in the Caribbean area, to preserve a forward presence near the Windward Passage to the Caribbean and to provide logistic support for Joint Task Force Operations in the Caribbean. Additionally, the base supports the Department of Homeland Security migrant operations and illegal immigrant flow control. Resident units at the base include Joint Task Force Guantanamo and its subsequent detention center, the Marine Corps Security Force Company and the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic Detachment Guantanamo Bay. Homeported watercraft include the USS Wanamassa large harbor tug and several ferry and utility boats.
