Mitchel Field had been a US Air Force base on Long Island, New York, until it was decommissioned in 1961. Although all units were reassigned to McGuire AFB, the base still offers military housing, an athletic complex and an exchange/commissary. The rest of the property has been redeveloped by Nassau County and now contains the Cradle of Aviation Museum, the Nassau Coliseum and two college campuses.
