Fort Lewis, also known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), is located near Tacoma, Washington. It serves as a training and mobilization center for all services and is the only Army power projection base west of the Rocky Mountains. The 1st Joint Mobilization Brigade serves as host unit. Major units at Fort Lewis include the 627th Air Base Group, the US Army I Corps, the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade and the 7th Infantry Division, among many others. The nearby sub-installation, Yakima Training Center, offers world-class training ranges and assault courses. Within Fort Lewis is the Gray Army Airfield, where helicopters launch for medical evacuations and search and rescue operations in areas nearby. Air Force units on base use the C-17 Globemaster III to conduct combat and humanitarian airlift operations from Fort Lewis.
